Critical Access Hospital experiences improved documentation and increased revenue with the HMS EDIS

Recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as a “100 Great Community Hospital” in 2013, Yoakum Community Hospital in Yoakum, Texas, has a legacy of high-quality care. The critical access hospital has been progressive with its patient care and safety goals, so transitioning to electronic documentation was a natural shift that hospital leadership was looking to make.

With the emergency department (ED) being the starting point for most of its admissions, the hospital chose to first implement the emergency department information system (EDIS) from Healthcare Management Systems (HMS) and then worked toward implementing HMS’s enterprise clinical and financial applications.

“The HMS EDIS was a quantum leap forward from the paper record system we had in place,” said Robert Foret, chief financial officer of Yoakum Community Hospital. “The EDIS is easy-to-use, which fostered a high rate of clinician adoption and resulted in more thorough documentation. Because the HMS EDIS automatically captures charges as care is documented, charge capture was more accurate and

complete. This led to significant revenue improvements within only six months of having the HMS EDIS in place.”

The graph below illustrates Yoakum’s level charges before and after going live with the HMS EDIS. Before implementing the system, Yoakum’s nursing staff’s duties included manual coding and evaluation & management (E&M) level calculation, which was quite time-consuming. However, with the HMS EDIS’s automatic, behind-the-scenes charge capture functionality, charges are captured as documentation occurs,

eliminating additional steps and user bias. And, because patient care was documented more thoroughly with the HMS EDIS, E&M levels were more accurately reported and billed.

  • The average charge per visit increased from $739 to $955, which illustrates the gap in charges before and after the HMS EDIS was implemented.
  • Yoakum experienced an increase in revenue, even after reducing the dollar amount it charged for Level 4 and 5 ED visits.

Patient Care and Safety Enhancements

In addition to the financial improvements, Yoakum improved patient care and safety with the HMS EDIS.

  • Electronic documentation reduced the opportunity for human errors, common with manual documentation, and it eliminated other issues, including illegible handwriting.
  • Clinicians can now access pertinent patient information from any location, which has enabled physicians to more efficiently prescribe corresponding treatments.

“While the financial improvements that Yoakum Community Hospital has achieved from the HMS EDIS are impressive, what’s most important is that the solution supported the hospital’s clinical needs and helped advance patient care and safety. We commend HMS and the entire Yoakum staff for their commitment to making this technology implementation a success,” said Brian Doerr, information technology senior vice president for Community Hospital Corporation (CHC), Yoakum Community Hospital’s parent company. “It is CHC’s goal for all of our hospitals to leverage solutions that enhance patient experiences and improve clinical outcomes. Yoakum Community Hospital leveraging the HMS EDIS is a great example of this.”
