Don Smithburg

SVP Hospital Operations

Don Smithburg serves as Senior Vice President of Hospital Operations for CHC. With more than 30 years of experience, Don brings extensive knowledge of hospital management, strategy, mergers, and emergency management to the CHC team and CHC client hospitals.

Don is best known for his leadership of the statewide public hospital system in Louisiana during and after Hurricane Katrina. Prior to moving into hospital management consulting in 2011, Don served in several hospital leadership roles, including CEO of the nine hospital Charity Hospital System in Louisiana as well as Executive Vice President of LSU. He also served as President/CEO of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Hospitals in Dallas. For 15 years, Don served in leadership positions at Truman Medical Centers and its partner, The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

He has served on numerous health care boards and commissions at all levels, including several gubernatorial appointments. An accomplished and national speaker, he has delivered legislative and Congressional testimonies on health care policy and management.

Earlier in his career, Don was named to Modern Healthcare’s Up & Comers in 1995, and in 2006, his institution was named top public hospital system in America by the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems.

Don is a graduate of The Colorado College, earned his MA from the University of New Mexico, and was named a Management Fellow and a Senior Policy Fellow by the New York University/National Public Health & Hospital Institute in Washington, D.C.
